لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Laa uqsimu bihaadhal-balad

I swear by this city, Makkah

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Wa anta hillun bihaadhal-balad

And you, O Muhammad, are free of restriction in this city

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ

Wa waalidin wa maa walad

And by the father and that which was born of him

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqnal-insaana fee kabad

We have certainly created man into hardship

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ

Ayahsabu al-lan yaqdira 'alayhi ahadun

Does he think that no one has power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا

Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal-lubadaa

He says: I have spent wealth in abundance

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun

Does he think that no one has seen him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Alam naj'al lahu 'aynayn

Have We not made for him two eyes?

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

Wa lisaanan wa shafatayn

And a tongue and two lips?

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

Wa hadaynaahun-najdayn

And have shown him the two ways?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ

Falaq-tahamal-'aqabah

But he has not broken through the difficult pass

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ

Wa maa adraaka mal-'aqabah

And what can make you know what is the difficult pass?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqabah

It is the freeing of a slave

أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ

Aw it'aamun fee yawmin dhee masqhabah

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

Yateeman dhaa maqrabah

An orphan of near relationship

أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ

Aw miskeeman dhaa matrabah

Or a needy person in misery

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ

Thumma kaana minal-ladheena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bis-sabri wa tawaasaw bil-marhamah

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

Ulaa'ika ashaabul-maymanah

Those are the companions of the right

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

Walladheena kafaroo bi-aayaatinaa hum ashaabul-mash'amah

But they who disbelieve in Our signs — they are the companions of the left

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ

'Alayhim naarun mu'sadah

Over them will be fire closed in
